Katie Couric, the well-known journalist and TV presenter, got a delightful surprise recently. She’s on her way to becoming a grandma! Her daughter, Ellie Monahan, is pregnant with her first child. Ellie chose a fun, Taylor Swift-inspired way to share the news with her mom.
The big reveal happened in a video on Katie’s Instagram page. There she was, sitting outside with her daughters, Ellie and Carrie. Carrie, sitting next to Katie, handed her a bracelet. It was similar to the beaded friendship bracelets that were all the rage during Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour this year. Katie had been to one of the concerts and forgotten her bracelet. She thought her daughters were giving her a replacement.
When Katie received the bracelet, she started reading the words on it. She stumbled a bit, sounding out, “Brand, brandy, brandy, B, granny.” Then it clicked. She read out loud, “Granny to be.” She started laughing before the meaning of the words hit her, and her face froze in surprise. Ellie confirmed, “I’m pregnant.” Katie, shocked, responded, “You are? Wow!” Ellie then asked her mom, “Are you freaked out?” Katie, still laughing, said, “No!”
The Taylor Swift-themed announcement was perfect for the family. Katie had raved about attending the Eras tour with her daughters back in August. She described it as a “once in a lifetime experience” she was thrilled to share with her girls. She joked that they each had a PhD in Swiftology, knowing every word to every song and every designer Taylor wore.
Katie Couric, founder of Katie Couric Media, shares her daughters with her late-husband, Jay Monahan. Jay passed away from colon cancer in 1998. Ellie, their daughter, married Mark Dobrosky in 2021. Ellie’s engagement in 2019 was another exciting event for Katie. She shared a post on Instagram about it and revealed that Mark proposed to Ellie with the ring Jay had given Katie.
